Parliamentary committee in favour of ‘Pro-Life’ bill

A Polish government bill which offers support to women with complicated pregnancies was on Thursday backed by a parliamentary committee.

However, some opposition MPs on the social policy and family committee abstained from voting, arguing they had insufficient time to become acquainted with the bill, which was submitted to the committee on Wednesday.
But Deputy Family Minister Krzysztof Michałkiewicz said time was of the essence in order to start the programme next year.
Prime Minister Beata Szydło promised to launch a “Pro-Life” programme in an attempt to discourage abortions of severely ill or disabled foetuses after a bill to restrict Poland’s already conservative abortion laws was thrown out of parliament a month ago.
The new bill promises a one-off pay out of PLN 4,000 (EUR 900) to mothers who give birth to seriously disabled or terminally ill babies and support including rehabilitation, cheaper medicine and housing. (vb/pk)
