Polish Defence Minister in 8-car pile-up

Three people remain in hospital after a Wednesday pile-up of eight cars, one of which was carrying Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz.

Macierewicz was not injured in the crash.
A fire department spokesman on Wednesday said: “Seven passenger cars, including two vehicles from a military police convoy, and a tow truck were involved in the accident; three people were injured and were taken to hospital”.
He said most of the cars were no longer road worthy, with flat tyres, broken windows and dented hoods.
A total of 15 people were involved in the crash.
According to the IAR news agency, eye witnesses claim the driver of one of the cars in the convoy had caused the crash.
But a spokeswoman for the local police said: “I cannot confirm information that the accident was caused by a military person”.
She added that military police have taken over an investigation into the crash.
Macierewicz was en route to Warsaw after a seminar organized by the College of Social and Media Culture in Toruń, in central Poland, entitled “The Aspects of Pride of Poles”.
After the crash, Macierewicz quickly changed cars and continued on to Warsaw, media reports have said.
