Poland was not affected by a ransomware virus which hit some 200,000 internet users in 150 countries across the world, locking up computers in hospitals, car factories, shops and schools, an official has said.

Stanisław Żaryn, a spokesman for Poland's secret services coordinator, told the IAR news agency that Polish experts “including the Internal Security Agency, the Polish Computer Emergency Response Team, as well as institutions connected to the Ministry of Digital Affairs are monitoring the situation all the time.”

The ransomware virus, called WannaCry, which caused havoc over the weekend was sent through an infected e-mail attachment.

It locked up computers all over the world, demanding USD 300-USD 600 from users for regaining access to their data.

The campaign used fake job offers and fake cyberthreat warnings.

Most people refused to pay up. It is estimated that by Sunday the attackers had received the equivalent of USD 32,000 in anonymous bitcoin currency. (tf/pk)
