Tuesday’s cyber attack was more threatening to Poland than a worldwide hack in May because it targeted countries "associated with Ukraine", Poland’s defence minister has said.

Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz said no Polish security institutions were attacked, but that the hack was “an important warning signal about the progressive activities of the enemy.”

According to Macierewicz, Ukraine said Russia was the enemy.

A ransomware virus, known as Petya, on Tuesday targeted Ukrainian banks, telecoms, government networks, airports, power plants and the Kiev underground. It also hacked computers in Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands, Russia, India and Poland.

On Wednesday, Poland’s Government Crisis Management Team met but decided the was no cause to raise security levels because police were informed that only a handful of Polish computers were affected.

An earlier WannaCry virus launched some 45,000 attacks in 74 countries in mid-May, mainly Russia, where it hit the interior ministry and a major telecoms company.

Macierewicz said Poland was “lucky” because he recently signed a PLN 368 million (EUR 87 million) deal for the sale of all shares in Exatel, “which has the potential to become the national cyber security system operator”, to the State Treasury. (vb/pk)
