Police have stepped up patrols on major roads and around cemeteries.
All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2 are when millions of Poles visit the graves of their loved ones, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to their home towns.
Police are out on patrol in droves in their annual “Operation Torch.”
On the first two days of the operation, 187 road accidents were reported and officers stopped more than 500 drunk drivers, according to Michal Gaweł of the National Police Headquarters.
The main causes of the road accidents were failure to give priority to other vehicles, failure to adapt a car’s speed to traffic conditions, and failure to give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings, according to police.
A total of 5,000 traffic policemen as well as crime prevention officers are taking part in this year’s Operation Torch, which began on Friday and runs until Thursday.
