Friday marked International Firefighters' Day.

"I bow my head … in respect for … your hard work," Joachim Brudziński said, adding that firefighters were the epitome of selfless service to the community.

He also said that the country’s Volunteer Fire Service would receive PLN 137 million (EUR 32.2 million, USD 38.4 million) in government funds this year, PLN 13 million more than last year.

There are about 30,000 professional firefighters and nearly 700,000 volunteer firemen in Poland, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

Firefighters enjoy strong public support in the country. Around 89 percent of Poles trust them, according to a poll commissioned last year by the Wirtualna Polska online service.
