The country this year marks the centenary of re-emerging as an independent state.

Up to 38.42 million new coins are being put into circulation, a number reflecting the size of Poland's population.

Barbara Jaroszek, the head of the issuing department at the National Bank of Poland, said that people may want to keep the coin as a souvenir but added that it can be used in all cash transactions and in vending machines.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.

The Polish PLN 5 coin is worth the equivalent of around EUR 1.20 and USD 1.40.
