Polish police say they have checked more than a quarter of a million vehicles for emissions this year, taking some of them off the roads in an effort to curb pollution.

As part of their “Smog” campaign, officers have inspected more than 258,000 cars since the start of the year, taking away nearly 5,500 registration documents from motorists, Radosław Kobryś from the country’s General Police Headquarters has said.
Some drivers have had their polluting cars towed away at their expense, Kobryś told public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency.
Owners of vehicles in poor condition or without technical certification are liable to a fine of up to PLN 500 (EUR 117, USD 113) in Poland, the IAR news agency reported.
