Polish motorists speed and check text messages and emails while driving more often than other Europeans, according to a study carried out in 11 countries.

Poles are also the most likely to get out of their car and engage in verbal brawls with other drivers, according to a survey of almost 12,500 motorists by France’s Vinci Autoroutes foundation.

The study, cited by public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency, also found that Poles drive the longest -- almost four-and-a-half hours -- before taking a break.

Experts recommend that drivers stop for a rest every two or three hours.

However, Poles are the least likely to drive after drinking: around 3 percent compared to a European average of 10 percent, IAR reported, citing the survey.

Aggressive behaviour behind the wheel is a rising problem on European roads, IAR added.

Around 2,800 people died and 11,000 were severely injured in road accidents in Poland in 2017, putting the country close to the bottom of a European Union ranking on road safety, according to a report.
