Death toll on Polish roads falls over holiday break

Twenty-eight people have been killed and 441 injured in road accidents nationwide since Poles headed off on an extended break at the end of last month.

Police said there were 361 accidents, with 1,815 drink drivers detained since last Tuesday.
Radosław Kobryś from the traffic department of the country’s General Police Headquarters said the number of fatalities fell from 50 during the same period last year.
He added that accidents were down by a third, as was the number of injuries.
The most common cause of accidents was speeding.
With May 1 (Labour Day) and May 3 (Constitution Day) public holidays, many Poles took the opportunity to head off on what has become known as the May long weekend.
