Only 2.7 million Poles with the condition are receiving effective treatment, state news agency PAP reported, citing the country’s National Health Fund (NFZ).
High blood pressure can cause severe complications and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and death.
The main causes of hypertension are poor eating habits, especially a diet high in saturated fats, excessive salt and alcohol consumption, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise, stress and genetic factors.
Health officials are encouraging Poles to measure their blood pressure regularly.
