Fourteen of the country’s 16 provinces were affected by drought in May and June amid sweltering weather.

Speaking in a television interview, Agriculture Minister Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski offered assurances to farmers.

He said: “We guarantee that farmers will not be left without help... However before deciding how large the assistance will be, we must first assess the extent of damages.”

Ardanowski added that summer droughts were becoming an increasingly regular occurrence.

In 2018 losses from drought in Poland were estimated at PLN 3.6 billion (then USD 965 million).
