Police in Słupsk, northern Poland, have detained a 30 year-old man who kept in four venomous snakes in his flat, including the Indian cobra and the Gaboon viper.
The reptiles are all young, measuring up to 80 centimetres, but their bites can result in instant death, say snake experts.
The man is to face two charges; one relates to exposure to grave bodily injury or loss of life and the other to violating the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
The reptile collector clearly has a passion for snakes. Several years ago, police confiscated one venomous snake of a highly dangerous species in his flat.
He is now facing a prison term up to five years.
The man’s entire collection of snakes will be handed over to one of Poland’s zoological gardens. (mk/pg)
