Polish parliamentarians have scrapped a citizens' bill to liberalize the abortion law, while agreeing to send a bid to ban "eugenic" abortion to the committee stage.
The aftermath of Wednesday's debate and vote saw apologies from opposition parties and announcements of penalties for MPs who were either absent from the chamber or voted against party discipline.
Meanwhile, many ruling Law and Justice MPs, including party leader Jarosław Kaczyński, voted in favour of continuing work on the bill to liberalize the abortion law.
